These are two very popular ways of extending your property. What is the difference between an conservatory and orangery?
Orangeries historically up until the 19th century were an extension on a property, much similar to a greenhouse, which was used to grow citrus fruits in such as oranges and lemons. This way the fruit growth was safe from the cold temperatures outside during winter months. In time, the availability of such fruit was more widespread therefore the use of orangeries changed to that of plant and shrub storage.
This is where conservatories came about. They were predominantly used for the storage and protection of herb plants and shrubs. By having glass ceilings and walls, maximum light would pour in allowing the faster growth of plants.
Conservatories differed from orangeries by actually being constructed as part of a property or building whereas orangeries could be a free standing structure in a garden or to the rear of a property.
In today’s modern times conservatories are much more commonplace on properties. Today their use is mainly as an extension feature to a property adding an extra room of sorts and generally in keeping with the style of the property.
Conservatories are available in a wide range of materials from aluminium to uPVC whereas orangeries will tend to be more timber based.
Both will feature double glazing aspects and the latest glass technologies to ensure that the space they provide is kept comfortable and the right temperatures at the right times of year. Walls on both are insulated which allow for both to be used throughout the year during different seasons.
