Sash Windows Essex
A sash window is made up of two movable panels, or “sashes”, that form a frame to hold panes of glass in place, separated by other panes of glass by glazing bars. This term is used exclusively for windows where the glazed panels are opened by sliding vertically, or horizontally in a style known as a sliding sash.
The oldest known examples of sash windows were installed in England in the 1670s. Nowadays, sash windows are mainly found on Georgian and Victorian houses.
In order to use them, the weight of the glazed panel is balanced by a heavy steel, lead, or cast-iron sash weight concealed within the window frame.
Sash windows can be fitted with simplex hinges which can allow the window to be locked into hinges on one side while the other side’s counterbalance is detached allowing for the window to be opened. Early sash windows were made from high-quality wood lasting generations and was recommended to be repaired with similar-quality slow-growth wood.
Traditionally there would be problems encountered with solid wooden sash windows such as wood rot, swelling and distortion of the woodwork and vigorous movement in strong winds. Sash windows do require a high level of maintenance when made from the traditional wood frameworks but if kept well they should last many years without needing any parts replaced.
